Turtle Creek Chamber OrchestraStateline Community Foundation is proud to announce a $2,500 Visit Beloit Jet Grant has been awarded to the Turtle Creek Chamber Orchestra.

Turtle Creek Chamber Orchestra is a grassroots group founded in 2012 to help bridge the gap in collaborative music-making during the summer months in Southern Wisconsin. I

n addition to performing public concerts, they also focus on introducing and educating young people to classical music and providing summer classes in music and instrument training.

Girl Scouts of Wisconsin-Badgerland Council is seeking mentors for its “Girls Who Rock” Program, one of our 2014 grant awardees.

“Girls Who Rock” is an afterschool program championed by local female mentors who engage at-risk 5th graders in Beloit elementary schools. Its purpose is to build the courage, confidence, and character of young girls through hand-on activities, self-esteem building, and conflict-resolution skills.

Sessions run for six weeks and start throughout the school year in September, January, and March.

Mentors receive a one-hour curriculum training class and work with Girl Scout Program Coordinators.

Our Feature Speaker is Juanita Irizarry.

Juanita IrizarryJuanita Irizarry is the Statewide Housing Coordinator for Long-Term Care Reform for the State of Illinois. Before joining the Office of the Governor in early 2014, Irizarry served as program officer of basic human needs at The Chicago Community Trust.  

Previous professional experience includes: director of the Christian Community Development Association’s national training institute; adjunct instructor at DePaul University and Eastern University; serving as executive director of Latinos United (now Latino Policy Forum); directing the business development and homeownership divisions of The Resurrection Project; serving as associate director of Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation; conducting apartment leasing for Hispanic Housing Development Corporation; and coordinating programs at the Olive Branch Mission.

Irizarry’s leadership led to a gubernatorial appointment to the executive committee of the Illinois Housing Task Force. She currently serves on the board of the Chicago Alliance to End Homelessness, the Metropolitan Planning Council Housing and Community Development Committee, and the Puerto Rican Agenda task force.  –

Grant Award to Roy Chapman Andrews Society

Meg LowmanStateline Community Foundation and Visit Beloit  are proud to announce that a $500 grant  has been awarded to The Roy Chapman Andrews Society.

The grant will be used for marketing expenses  for “The Distinguished Explorer Award” ceremony held on April 11, 2014.

Founded in 1998, the Roy Chapman Andrews Society promotes the life, work, and adventures of the Beloit, Wisconsin, native who may have inspired fictional characters such as “Indiana Jones”. The mission of the Roy Chapman Andrews Society is to honor the legacy of Roy Chapman Andrews who became one of the most celebrated explorers of the 20th century.

The Beloit Domestic Violence Survivor Center Receives Grant

Domestic Violence Center KitchenThe Beloit Domestic Violence Survivor Center received a grant in the amount of $990 from the Stateline Community Foundation which made a kitchen renovation possible.

The funds were used to purchase a new countertop for the shelter facility.

The donation of the cabinets from the Ironworks Hotel, formerly the Beloit Inn, was coordinated by a group of women enrolled in the Leadership Development Academy, who have focused on the shelter for their class project.

The building serves as a temporary home for families who have experienced violence in their lives

Bonnie Wetter, far right, was honored Friday night as the Bridge to the Future Award winner for her lifelong philanthropic efforts in the Stateline Area. The annual award was presented by Tara Tinder, left, Executive Director of the Stateline Community Foundation. Ann Sitrick, center, Executive Director of the Beloit Health System Foundation, also spoke of her friendship and admiration for Wetter.

The Stateline Community Foundation held its 27th Annual Celebration Friday night at LaCasa Grande.  Congratulations to Bonnie Wetter, recipient of the 10th Annual “Bridge to the Future” award.

This award honors local individuals, organizations or corporations that exemplify the spirit of philanthropy, leadership and innovation in support of our community.

This dedication and determination was part of Alex’s approach to all she undertook from the time she was small, says her mother Denice Larson.
